Dear Rabbi Jakobovits,
Thank you for presenting us
with the Memorandum regarding the proposed comprehensive
research on The Policies of the Torah Community Towards
the Wider Jewish World. I was very impressed by the
underlying attitude on which this proposal is based, namely
that there should be a radical change of thinking patterns
in Israeli society in general, and among the Ultra-Orthodox
in particular, regarding the role of the Ultra-Orthodox in
the wider Jewish world, in the context of the historical
period we are at now.
I estimate that this radical
change is going on informally at the present, and that a
thorough and comprehensive research is needed to help
facilitate that change.
I read through the proposed
methodology of the research and found that it will be based
mainly on research procedures that are accepted as
scientifically viable, such as data collection and analysis,
long-term ramifications, and various possible solutions.
I think the research may make
an important contribution for the remodeling of the policies
of Ultra-Orthodox Jewry in its attitude to coexistence
within Israeli society, and thus reduce the present cultural
divide between secular and religious Jews.
I wish this project much
success.
